What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, involves removing infected pulp tissues from within a tooth to relieve pain and improve function. It also stops the infection from spreading and affecting other parts of your mouth. Root canal treatment enables you to keep your natural tooth in place, which is the preferred option for maintaining normal function, proper alignment, and for your oral health. We do all we can to save your tooth from extraction.

The pulp can become infected due to a number of reasons, including deep decay, a large restoration, a cracked or fractured tooth, trauma, excessive wear, and severe gum disease. Symptoms of infection include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling, tenderness, and discolouration. If you spot any of these, please talk to us or book a root canal consultation.

What does root canal treatment involve?

  1. Root Canal Treatment

    Consultation

Your root canal treatment at Bright Dental care begins with a detailed consultation. We examine your tooth and take an X-ray to see an accurate view of the root canals and surrounding bone. We plan your treatment, giving you an idea of the amount of appointments needed for your case. We also give you the chance to ask us any questions.

  2. Root Canal Treatment

    Flushing & shaping

We isolate your affected tooth by placing a rubber sheet around it to keep it dry. Using local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable, we remove the infected pulp from inside your tooth and flush the root canals with an antibacterial solution. We shape the canals with specialised tiny instruments and re-wash them to remove any lasting debris.

  3. Gutta-percha

    Sealing

We fill the root canals of your tooth with a rubber compound material called gutta-percha. This seals your tooth and prevents any further infection by stopping bacteria from being able to enter.

  4. Root Canal Treatment

    Restoration

To end your root canal treatment, your tooth is sealed with a permanent filling. In some cases, especially where tooth function has been compromised, we may use a tooth-coloured crown to restore your tooth shape and provide an excellent finish.
