What is sedation?

Intravenous (IV) sedation is a safe and effective way to make you feel able to visit the dentist and help overcome your dental anxiety. It makes you feel much more willing to undergo treatment and eliminates your worries.

You remain conscious and able to answer questions throughout, so your dentist can treat you more efficiently and comfortably. Sedation is a very valuable option and can really help nervous patients access essential dental care and achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.

What does dental sedation involve?

If you are interested in IV sedation or if we believe it may be beneficial for you, we discuss the procedure in as much detail as you are comfortable with. We carefully assess your overall health, including your blood pressure and oxygen levels, to ensure your safety.

The level of sedation is carefully adjusted to your specific needs and administered through a small, flexible tube inserted into a vein in your hand. The effects of the sedation are felt quickly, and you are closely monitored throughout your treatment. Once you are comfortably relaxed, we proceed with your dental procedure, including administering local anaesthetic for pain relief if necessary.

As the effects of the sedation may take some time to wear off completely, you will need to arrange for someone to accompany you home and keep an eye on you after your appointment.
