Extractions

Why do I need an extraction?

Reasons for extracting teeth include:

  • To prevent further complications caused by extensive decay or gum disease
  • To remove impacted or infected wisdom teeth
  • To remove a baby tooth that is preventing the emergence of a permanent tooth
  • To create more space for successful orthodontic or denture treatment
Extractions

What does an extraction involve?

Simple extractions

Simple extractions are usually straightforward procedures that take place in a relatively short appointment. We numb the area with local anaesthetic and gently loosen the tooth using dental forceps. The tooth typically comes out easily without significant impact on the surrounding gums.

Surgical extractions

In some cases, a more complex extraction procedure may be necessary. Surgical extractions involve making a small incision in the gum to access and remove teeth that are broken, impacted, or located beneath the gum line. Larger teeth may need to be removed in sections.

Frequently asked questions

Immediately after your tooth has been taken out, try to keep the site clean by rinsing with warm, salty water. Encourage healing of the affected area by eating softer foods and chewing on the opposite side of your mouth. Also, try to avoid smoking or using a straw, as these can dislodge the clot that forms in the hole after extraction.
